How to Market Your Artwork

Today, with artists having the Internet at their disposal, self-promotion seems like a fairly straightforward process – a few social media posts and a blog and you’re good to go! Right? Wrong. Well, partly. Although these are the greatest possible platforms artists today could use to showcase their work, the only way they can be at a great advantage is if the medium is used wisely. There are countless online portfolios and social media profiles. What can you do to make yours stand out?

So if you’re an artist trying to put yourself out there, we at Paintcollar would like to give you a hand! Here are a few things that we believe would put any budding artist on the creative map.

1. Branding

If you plan on making a living off of your artwork, learn to convince people that it’s more than just a hobby. You mean business here.

which sounds awfully serious, but it really doesn’t have to be! It’s your brand and it should be everything you’d like it to be.

Allow your online portfolios to reflect just that. Tumblr and WordPress are some really popular blog-platforms for those who are just starting out. With over a thousand layout options and basic HTML coding that can easily be looked up online, creating a web portfolio that is unique to your style and character won’t take more than a few clicks.  

Try to create a visual identity that defines you, and stick to it, at least for a little while. Just like any other brand, think of what you might want to call yourself – or your work, rather. Having your own logo is also a great way of making a mark on the minds of your audience. Once you have your look in place, you could proceed to giving it different forms – business cards, notebooks, stamps – the choices are endless.  When you make visiting cards and more, don’t forget to give links to online sites where your art is available for sale.

2.Social Media Presence

Maintain your personal social media accounts for friends and family, but create separate pages for your artwork. This allows people to look at your profile and think of you as a professional artist – and not just that person they met once at someone’s wedding.

An artist’s social media profile allows the audience to connect with them and their work more directly. It’s personal, it’s easy and there’s a lot you can do! Today, a lot of different people have their own preferences when it comes down to using certain social media websites. While some people may prefer something as visual as Instagram, some probably turn to Twitter to be in the loop with what’s going on and find interesting people, artists included of course. Be sure that your social media presence is vast enough for your artwork to be accessed by all these different users. However, as anyone looking to market their work, it’s important to ensure that the quality of the posts isn’t compromised.

One major indispensable pointer to abide by is to always, ALWAYS share the link of products with your art/designs on your social media channels. No matter how regularly you post on social media, make sure that you always provide people with a direct link to purchasing that design on products.

3.Website 
Having your own website is always a bonus. You don’t have to rely on the mercy of other sites to link people to your work this way. 4.Cross Linking

Remember to cross-link your profiles across social media websites. Say you have a Paintcollar account with some of your great content; you should, however, make sure that you redirect it to your Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr or any other social networking site you may have an account with. This is how social media traffic cross-connects and widens in order to reach new audiences.  A vast social media presence across different platforms creates a sense of professionalism and convinces your audience of the legitimacy of your work.

This also works the other way around. Audiences who discover your work on social media, need to be directed to your online webstores. Hence linking your Social Media profiles to your Paintcollar profile, and vice versa, is one step you shouldn’t forget.

 

5.Be Your own Brand Ambassador

Present your family and friends with your own artwork, products with your designs and see them become friendly advocates of your talent along with your loyal customers. Self expression that is a treat to the eyes never goes unappreciated!

6.Networking
As an artist who is seeking to learn, grow and be inspired, make sure you are in touch with the right people! Your art demands to go out, engage with other kins and kinds, form allies and be a part of something bigger that may inspire or elevate it.

This is made easy in the virtual world. While it’s great to follow an inspiring artist with over a hundred thousand followers on Instagram, also try to follow people who may be in the same boat as you. It’s always nice to find like-minded people with common goals – as an artist, this opens up doors to interesting discussions and possible collaborations, which is always a great thing.

Apart from this, don’t forget to get out there!

As an artist, it always helps to try and put your guards down, step out of your comfort zone and initiate good conversations with interesting people you may come across. Not only does it help with marketing your work, but it helps in understanding different worldviews and perspectives – something that is valued by any good artist.

Another tip would be to go old school! Put up your art in any place where it can be viewed and appreciated – it could be at your usual café, the local library or your workplace. However, don’t forget to seek permission from the right people.

 

7.#Tagging

Essentially, tags should be labels or words that easily describe your work – these words form a link between the search keywords and your work that is put up on the web.
First rule in the book of tagging is to understand and religiously practice Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ). Google has a way of ranking your web content according to the most common keywords used to search content world wide. So to make your art more visible to anybody searching anything even remotely close to your content, make sure you check ‘Google Trends‘, and give titles, description, or names that are more SEO-friendly. It’s like standing in a queue that does not recede, only extends. And well, you definitely don’t want to stand right at the back when what you got deserves attention and admiration.

Remember to use the right ways to make your social media content discoverable by those who don’t follow you (yet). Tags on social media platforms and art curating sites like Paintcollar help categorize artwork and ensure that they’re conveniently accessible. While some sites have a bunch of popular tag options that you can choose from, others don’t – in that case, remember to use keywords that are widely used.

The best way to understand and learn the art of tagging is to learn it from the masters.

Pro Tip for Igers : A #hashtag makes a post discoverable even if it is mentioned in the comments. So you may go on your merry way to post a pretty Instagram post with a pretty description, and slay it with the hashtags in the comments section. The Instagram picture above by renowned artist Navanitha Sreejith a.k.a. @inkartnavi practices this method regularly, and the no. of followers and likes are a good indicator that this method works.

Basically what we’re getting at is that this is going to be very useful to you. Tagging is cool. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

 

8.Be Updated
Using recent trends as inspiration and depicting them through the creativity of your artwork is always good idea. Often, work that is current and in sync with certain trends is very likely to be circulated amongst a wider audience! Be as aware as you possibly can about things that go around you – this isn’t just to market your work, but it’s also to possibly help your work grow. Who knows, you might just find your inspiration in today’s headlines.

 

9.Make Personalized and Engaging Content
Creating a social media profile is just the first step. But it’s important to realize that it always helps to focus on quality over quantity. Instead of spamming your audience with the same posts or a long line of similar posts – try and mix things up a bit. Use platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr to let your followers in – familiarize them with your ways of working, give them sneak peaks into your works in progress, share with them snippets of things that inspire you and make you the artist you are. Gave your workspace or studio a little makeover? Why not share a photograph online?

Allow yourself to build a lasting relation with those who enjoy your work – and for this, transparency and consistency is key.
